Billy Mitchell

Nickname: The Slug / Billiam / Willy

Occupation/Education: Studying Commerce at Melbourne University

Family: Got 5 brothers and 1 little sister!

Umpiring Discipline: Field

Years Umpiring and how old were you when you started: 6 years, and I was 13 when I first started

Reason for umpiring: Lots of reasons, but mainly the challenge of running a good game and always bettering myself as an umpire. I also enjoy the social aspect and my role as the junior coach.

Highlight of umpiring career to date: In 2013 I was selected to fly to Far-north QLD for a week to umpire two under 16’s representative matches. These were really high skilled games and it was an awesome week up in the sun!

Umpiring goal for next season: Umpire the senior grand final

Who had the most influence on your umpiring career and why: I have to say a couple. I think you find the most influential people are those who run with you and are there to support you whenever you need assistance or just want some advice. For those reasons I’m going to say Tim Rath and Richard Adamson.

Most embarrassing moment on a footy field: It was a few years ago when I was boundary umpiring... I was backing up from the point post after a behind in a final at Romsey and tripped over onto the ground right in front of the Romsey bar area. I copped it every time I ran past that section for the rest of the day!

What training drill do you dread the most: Any sort of time trials!

What is your prematch routine: I don’t really have one, but I avoid watching the game before mine because I feel it makes me tired and I can’t concentrate fully when I’m umpiring.

What is your favourite RDFL ground: Probably Sunbury Kangaroos because I don’t have to travel to get there!

Which umpire is:

Smartest: Chris Stead, he’s a scientist!

Most Annoying: Joel Wood, and he’ll call me for the 10th time today when he reads this!!

Funniest: Tim Rath or Paul O’Connor

Most Talented: Kenny, I think he should become a professional chef by the way he cooks.

Coaches Pet: Chris Stead, only because I know I won’t get in trouble by saying him

If umpire training was the TV show survivor, who would be voted off first and who would win: Well if the players and crowd were voting, the Semmo’s would be voted off first and Ti-Arne would win because she’s beautiful!

Hobbies aside from umpiring: Recreational flying and holidaying.

AFL team: Brisbane Lions

If you could invite any 5 people around for dinner, who would it be: All 5 One Direction band members so we could compare hairstyles!

Which Hollywood actor would play you if they made a movie about you: David Spade

I enjoy being a part of the Riddell umpires because

It is a fantastic group to be a part of, very welcoming and supportive of everyone and although things do competitive during finals time, we’re all mates so it’s just good fun!
