For many supporters, you only see a handful an umpires on the weekend at your game, however behind the scenes there is a huge group of people supporting our club. Thats right, the Riddell Umpires are a club like any other in the RDFL. We have a President, Committee, club rooms, a website with a huge social media following. In fact we are one of the biggest clubs in the league with over 160 members.
A training night also would look similar to any football club. A few keen umpires turn up early to do some extra laps, while a couple of the ‘older crew’ sit around talking about their game on the weekend. Fitness coach, Billy Mitchell, is setting up witches hats under the supervision of the coaches who all have some ideas of what should happen at training.
The kitchen team have started on dinner. Each week close to 60 umpires sit down and have dinner together after training. Senior Coach Dwayne Connell is preparing the away change rooms as a meeting space where he will go through some areas from improvement based on feedback over the last few weeks.
During training, umpires do a combination of fitness and skill training. Injured umpires are treated by our trainer, while some of our observers pull aside umpires who they watched last week to give them feedback. Our General Manager, Steven Giles, speaks to our Social Manager, Chris Stead, about the success of our $1000 raffle and what needs to be done for the next major event.
This is a a typical night at training. A passionate group of umpires who love football!
It’s not to late to get started in umpiring for 2017. Many umpire join now as a great platform for next year. If you would like to join us, visit www.riddellumpires.com.au for all the information you need!
