Injury Curse Hits Riddell Umpires

There is never a good time to be injured but finals time is definitely not the time that you want to be off the park.

Unfortunately the injury curse has hit the Riddell Umpires at the worst time of the year. The run started with young Zac Darmanin who injured his knee before he was set to run the boundary for the U/14 Turner Reserves Grand Final. The run continued as senior finals began. Week 1 saw Daryl "Dodger" Odgers pull a hamstring on a routine tap through in the senior Elimination Final between Diggers Rest and Sunbury Kangaroos. He was then followed in the injury curse stakes by 2013 Boundary Umpire Of The Year Andrew O'Keefe who found out today that he has a fracture in his right foot which occured during the BFL Elimination Final between Darley and Lake Wendouree.

All these boys were going to umpiring deep into finals time and having to miss out on Grand Finals is a bitter pill to swallow. Everyone at the Riddell Umpires wishes these guys a fast recovery and we ask the group to offer these guys some support when you see them around the place.

USAFL Umpires Visit Riddell Umpires

Last week at training the Riddell Umpires were pleased to welcome Jeff and Toby Person from the United States Australian Football League (USAFL). Jeff (field umpires coach) and Toby (goal umpires coach) are currently in Australia for the international cup. This international cup is Jeff's 5th international cup and there is a reason he keeps coming back to Australia. He loves football and loves umpiring.

AFL Northern Territory Umpires Coaches Visit Riddell Umpires

This Wednesday the Umpire Coaches from AFL Northern Territory will visit Riddell Umpires Training. This visit is a great way to build umpiring relations and share and learn from other umpiring associations. There will be meetings for all umpiring disciplines this week (see below), that will be attended by these coaches. All umpires are asked to attend to support this initative. Please let your coach know if you can't attend.

Two Great Umpires. Two Very Different Paths

Daryl In 1988 two Riddell Umpire greats umpired their first senior competition grand finals. Daryl Odgers and Kieron Nicholls shared the honour when they walked out onto the field for the U/18 Grand Final. Daryl joined the Riddell Umpires in 1987 while Kieron started his career in the juniors in 1984. 1988 was the year of Daryl Odgers, with him winning the Golden Whistle award.

Girls Take Over

Girl power is set to take over the Riddell District Football Netball League this weekend. The Riddell Umpire Association will have one game at Melton Centrals with a near all-girl panel to promote women in football.
